Toy Schnauzers are a “MUST HAVE”!!! Like the Toy Poodle, the toy schnauzer is on a long road to recognition. There are some breeders and persons without knowledge that claim that these are only “runts”. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Runts are usually sickly and can have continual health problems. Why would someone in their right mind buy a puppy labeled a runt???? I’ve had as many as 4 toy sized puppies in a litter. Have you ever heard of having 4 runts in a litter? These were completely healthy puppies, not sickly runts.
At the same time, he can be stubborn. Really stubborn. Dug-into-the-sand stubborn. His favorite way of rebelling is to pretend that he doesn’t hear you (“La, la, la, I can’t heeear you!”) when you try to make him do something. To maintain order in your household, you must be in charge. If you let him get by with something even one time, he’ll remember it forever and you’ll find the behavior escalating. This is one of the downsides of living with a dog who might possibly be smarter than you are.
There are many responsible, reputable and ethical breeders of the miniature schnauzer in the United States. However, it does take some time and effort on your part to locate them. The internet is a good place to start, but before you do this take the time to educate yourself about the miniature schnauzer breed. I would estimate, that about 95% of the breeders you will come across will be backyard breeders. If you are armed with the knowledge about well-bred miniature schnauzers, you will be able to avoid them quite easily. Run, don’t walk when you hear the words Toy, Teacup, Parti-Colors, White, and other unrecognized colors and characteristics not supported by the Miniature Schnauzer Breed Standard.
As with every breed, you should always teach children how to approach and touch dogs, and always supervise any interactions between dogs and young children to prevent any biting or ear or tail pulling on the part of either party. Teach your child never to approach any dog while he’s eating or sleeping or to try to take the dog’s food away. No dog, no matter how friendly, should ever be left unsupervised with a child.
The Miniature Schnauzer dog breed has it all in one small package: intelligence, affection, an extroverted temperament, humor, and a personality that’s twice as big as their bodies. Throw in that walrus mustache and quivering enthusiasm, and they’ll make you laugh every day.
